The AWANA Grand Prix is a family-oriented affair that allows children age 2 through grade 5 (and really ANYONE!) to express their ingenuity by creating and racing their own wooden Grand Prix car, while enabling our AWANA club to share God's plan of salvation to those who participate in and attend this fun event involving their child. In addition to race categories for the different age groups, we will also include an “open” division, especially for leaders, church staff and any others caught up in the excitement of crafting their own cars.
NEW THIS YEAR: We will have a division called the CHAMPIONS division, which will include our local “pro”, “hard-core” competitors and top speed champions from our past Grand Prix races. Feeling like you have the car to beat? The Champions division is open to any racer. Our Grand Prix will take place on Sunday night, April 2nd, as a part of our normal Awana schedule! Registration will take place on the Saturday afternoon, April 1st from 12pm to 2:00pm leading up to Race Day, and on the afternoon of the race between 3:00-4:30 pm.
Effective February 5th, all children age 2 through grade 5 (and again, really ANYONE!) can purchase materials to build their own “derby car” (small pine blocks of wood and plastic wheels). These kits will be on sale BEFORE (5:00-5:15 PM) and AFTER (6:45-7:00 PM) each SUNDAY Awana session in the Activity Center/Connector Hallway. The cost to purchase supplies to build a car will be $5.00 (you have choice of either a wood block kit or a pre-cut car kit). The cost to race it on April 1st will be $2.00. We will also be offering two “Grand Prix Construction Workshops” the two Sunday afternoons before Race Day (March 19th and 26th from 3:00-5:00 PM) to help beginners and those who may not be mechanically inclined to “build” a car. You can come to the Activity Center on those two Sunday afternoons for help on cutting out your block of wood, and also to get some great ideas on how to make your car go fast!!
The cars will race on our very own four-lane track, and all scoring will be handled electronically, with all initial competitors running the same amount of races (no elimination). After a few heats, top times will race in the finals. Awards will be given for both design and speed. We will award first-, second- and third-place trophies for each category. Each clubber who participates will also receive a ribbon. So come by and get your kit, and start work on that winning racecar soon!!
